There is a forbidden love in the story and more adventure by way of a murder that occurs. Most of the people in Old Ox dislike the idea. He invites two freedmen, Prentiss and Landry who are brothers, to work the land with him and share in its profits. George is not a young man, yet begins a new crop on his land - peanuts. They both grieve and withdraw in their own way. They are devastated to learn of the death of their only child, Caleb, in the war. Isabelle and George, white Southern property owners, live outside the town of Old Ox. Nathan Harris has written a quietly rebellious novel set after Emancipation has occurred.
